Design, direction, and production of a new brand for RISD’s eponymous fine art and design museum. When the the Museum was formed in 1877, it occupied a single building with the School of Design; the two were symbiotically linked. Today, 125 years later, the relationship has retained little of its past virility.
Through ad-hoc additions and an unclear sense of mission or audience, the Museum today lacks a cohesive sense of identity— and certainly does not reflect the culture or spirit of RISD. To remedy this our design team took a pulse of the state of the Museum, coming to the conclusion that the RISD Museum’s most important asset was that it was RISD’s Museum. By tackling the big idea of Museum strategy and direction we created a new brand system celebrating the diversity of the Museum’s collection, the student body, and the culture of Providence.
